The Case for change
AFC Rushden & Diamonds currently ground-share with Rushden & Higham United FC at Hayden Road. This arrangement has allowed our Club to continue competing and maintain a presence in Rushden. However, many of our players, coaches, and community programmes are based in Northampton, which can make day-to-day operations challenging. We are grateful for the support and partnership of Rushden & Higham United FC, which has provided stability over the years.
Ground-sharing has always been a temporary solution. As the Club has grown — both on the pitch and in the community — the limitations of borrowing facilities have become increasingly clear. To secure the future of AFC Rushden & Diamonds and allow the Club to reach its full potential, it is time to explore a permanent, purpose-built home.
Limitations of Ground-Sharing
While Hayden Road has kept the Club rooted in Rushden, ground-sharing comes with unavoidable challenges:
- Lack of Control – We cannot make improvements or adaptations to the facilities to suit our needs.
- Scheduling Conflicts – Matches, training, and community events are constrained.
- Club Identity – It’s difficult to build a sense of home and grow our presence in borrowed space.
- Community Engagement – Our outreach programmes are limited by availability at the ground.
- Commercial Growth – Opportunities for income, sponsorship, and partnerships are restricted.
These limitations affect not just our first team, but also youth development, coaching programmes, and wider community initiatives.
Why We Need a Permanent Home
To thrive — not just survive — AFC Rushden & Diamonds need a permanent stadium. A home that:
- Supports football at all levels, from first team to youth and community programmes.
- Provides a base for activities seven days a week, all year round.
- Allows the Club to grow its identity, facilities, and partnerships.
- Creates opportunities for the wider Rushden community.
A purpose-built home will give the Club stability, flexibility, and the space to expand both on and off the pitch. It will also provide a focal point for supporters, volunteers, and residents, a place the community can use, enjoy, and be proud of.
Looking Ahead
Ground-sharing has served us well as a short-term solution, but the future of AFC Rushden & Diamonds depends on having our own space. A permanent stadium is essential to secure the Club’s long-term ambitions and continue building a Club rooted in its supporters and the wider community.
